The recent presidential debate in Philadelphia sparked significant attention, with voters weighing in on the performances of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. According to a CNN poll by SSRS, voters who watched the debate overwhelmingly felt that Kamala Harris outperformed Trump. The poll revealed that 63% of debate watchers believed Harris had a stronger showing than Trump’s 37%. This marked a decisive shift, as voters were evenly split before the debate, with 50% anticipating a strong performance from each candidate.
Harris not only exceeded expectations but also significantly improved her favorability among voters. Before the debate, only 39% viewed her positively; after the debate, this number rose to 45%. In contrast, Trump’s favorability remained largely unchanged, with 39% of viewers rating him favorably, both before and after the event.
Harris's strong debate performance did not sway the majority of voters' presidential choices. A large 82% majority of registered voters who watched the debate reported that it had no impact on their decision. However, among Trump supporters, 23% admitted to reconsidering their stance, while only 12% of Harris supporters felt similarly.
On key issues, Trump maintained an edge in areas like the economy, immigration, and his role as commander-in-chief, while Harris was more trusted on topics like abortion and democracy protection. Harris’ ability to resonate with independent voters also surged post-debate, with her favorability rising from 30% to 48%.
In comparison to a previous debate earlier this year, where Trump outperformed Joe Biden, Harris has managed to tip the scales in her favor, leaving a lasting impression on debate watchers and reinforcing her position as a strong contender in the presidential race. The debate marked a significant moment in Harris' political journey, boosting her public perception and enhancing her debate credentials.
